Life is a Sacred Joke. Sorridi! è un monologo di grande impatto emotivo, fatto di parole, immagini e musica, come il racconto di un cantastorie. Sono frammenti di un’esperienza vissuta nel quotidiano, un racconto vero, drammatico, a volte tragico a volte grottesco e perfino comico… un po’ come la vita.
È la storia di Peter, un ragazzo molto sensibile che è cresciuto in un quartiere povero e multietnico di una grande metropoli. In piena crisi d’identità, con un padre autoritario ma assente, una madre che si nutre di antidolorifici e un fratello che viene sempre considerato il migliore, Peter sperimenta su di sé il disagio del vivere, rifugiandosi in un mondo buio, dal quale ogni tanto fa capolino per affacciarsi alla vita. Ma subito dopo torna a rifugiarsi nel suo guscio per non dover affrontare il giudizio degli altri. Ha scelto di vivere con il “mostro” della droga, alla continua ricerca di approvazione e di affetto da parte degli altri, per poi scoprire a trentasei anni che il suo vero mostro era la dipendenza dalle droghe e che prima di ottenere l’approvazione dagli altri doveva imparare ad accettare se stesso.
La storia ha un lieto fine. Peter indica una via di rinascita che necessariamente non sarà uguale per tutti. Però a tutti fa capire che è possibile imparare ad accettarsi, che è possibile trovare il coraggio di affrontare la vita e tutto ciò che essa ci riserva, lottando contro le avversità e cominciando ad apprezzare anche le piccole cose. Cominciando a fare, invece che subire, a dare invece che chiedere, ad amare invece che aspettare di essere amati. Lo spettacolo sotto forma di “One Man Show” sarà presentato nelle comunità per tossicodipendenti, nelle carceri, nelle scuole, nelle università e in contemporanea con la mostra Oltre il muro, in cui Peter Hasson espone le sue opere più recenti, in alcune importanti gallerie d.arte a Roma, a Firenze, a Taormina e Siracusa.
Life is a Sacred Joke. Smile! is a monologue of great emotional impact, made of words, images and music like the tale of a story-teller. It is the fragments of an everyday experience, a true story, dramatic, sometimes tragic and some grotesque and even comic… it is a little bit like life.
It is the story of Peter, a young boy, very emotional, who grows up in a poor and multi-ethnic area of a big metropolis. He is in the middle of a true identity crisis with an authoritarian yet absent father, a mother living on painkillers and a brother, who, of course, is always the best. Peter experiences for himself the discomfort of living, hiding in a dark world from where he comes out, every now and then to show himself to life. But immediately after he takes refuge in his shell, in this way, he does not have to face the other’s judgement. He has chosen to live with “the monster” of drugs, continuously looking for approval and affection from the others. Then, at 36, he discovers that his real monster was the addiction to drugs, and that before he could obtain approval from the others, he had to first accept himself.
The story has a happy ending. Peter shows a rebirth way that will not be necessarily the same for everyone. But, it makes us understand that it is possible to learn to accept ourselves, that it is possible to find the courage to face life and everything that it reserves us by fighting against the tribulations and starting to appreciate the little things.
Starting to achieve instead of suffering, to give instead of asking, to love instead of waiting to be loved. The show, presented as a “One Man Show”, will be introduced in the Rehab centres, in jails, in schools, in colleges and at the same time with the exhibition Beyond the wall, where Peter Hasson displays his most recent works, in some of the most important galleries in Rome, Florence, in Taormina and Siracusa.

Peter Hasson è nato a San Francisco nel 1947. È un artista eclettico: pittore, scrittore, fotografo e musicista. Ha iniziato a fare uso di droghe da adolescente. A metà degli anni Ottanta è riuscito a disintossicarsi e ha raccontato il suo percorso di rinascita in Life is a Sacred Joke, il libro da cui è stato tratto lo spettacolo presentato in anteprima al 53° Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto nella sezione Rossobastardo Live. Da qualche anno cattura immagini di un insolito mondo che ci circonda e di cui non ci accorgiamo quasi mai, fatto di dettagli, particolari, ombre, riflessi, umori della natura che si compone e si decompone, che lui osserva senza alcun preconcetto morale, astenendosi dal giudizio, per dipingere con la macchina fotografica straordinari paesaggi immaginari. Presenta a Rimini le sue opere in una mostra itinerante dal titolo Oltre il muro.
Peter Hasson was born in San Francisco in 1947. He is an eclectic artist: painter, writer, photographer and musician. He started to use drugs when he was a teenager. He came off drugs in mid-Eighties and reported his rebirth journey in Life is a Sacred Joke, the book from which the show was based, and that was presented as a preview at the 53rd Festival of the Two Worlds in Spoleto, in the section Rossobastardo Live. Since some years, he captures images of an unusual world that surrounds us and that we almost never realize it exists: made of details, particulars, shadows and reflections, humors of the nature that composes and decomposes; and that he observes without any moral prejudice, without judging, in order to paint, with his camera, extraordinary fantastic landscapes. He will present his works in Rimini in an itinerating exhibition called Beyond the Wall.
Edoardo Salerno
Autore, regista e produttore. Entra nel mondo dello spettacolo imparando il mestiere dal padre Enrico Maria. In teatro collabora con Ugo Margio nei primi anni dell’avanguardia romana, poi con Alberto Lionello, Antonella Steni, Giancarlo Sbargia e infine con Daniele D’Anza con cui realizza grandi produzioni come Cyrano al Teatro Tenda e Sei Atti Unici per il Premio Giovannini al Teatro Sistina. Nell’86 entra in Telemontecarlo (oggi La7) come regista e diventa responsabile dei programmi di attualità. Nel ’90 apre una casa di produzione con cui realizza documentari industriali per grandi aziende (Acea, Alenia, Esso, Ibm, Michelin) e diversi documentari d’arte, tra cui Beuys e la Natura e Villa Lemot, acquistati dai più importanti musei del mondo. Scrive dialoghi di film, collabora a sceneggiature e testi teatrali. Ha tradotto il libro di Peter Hasson e insieme a lui ne ha realizzata la versione teatrale.
Author, director and producer, he enters into show business by learning the art from his father, Enrico Maria. In theatre, he works with Ugo Margio, during the first years of the roman avant-garde, and then with Alberto Lionello, Antonella Steni, Giancarlo Sbragia; and finally with Daniele D’Anza, with whom he creates big productions such as Cyrano at the Teatro Tenda and Sei Atti Unici (Six Single Acts) for the Giovannini Award at the Sistina Theatre. In 1986, he started to work at the TV network Telemontecarlo (now La7) as a director, and he becomes manager of the current affairs programmes. In 1990, he started a production house with which he produces industrial documentaries for big companies (Acea, Alenia, Esso, Ibm, Michelin) and several other’s arts documentaries; for example Beuys and the Nature, and Villa Lemot, bought by some of the most important museums worldwide. He writes dialogues for movies, working with the writing of screenplays and theatrical texts. He translated the book of Peter Hasson, and, together with him, he produced the theatrical version.
