21.30 ELEANOR’S SECRET
Directed by Dominque Monféry
Production: Gaumont-Alphanim, La Fabrique, Lanterna Magica
France/Italy, 2009, 76'

Nat, very fond of stories but not as much with reading, receives as a gift a library and all the books within it... a rather bizarre heritage bequeathed to him from his Aunt Eleanor!
Actually, every work is an original piece, and at night time, heroes from the children's literature come out from their books... Nat starts to be acquainted with them and is destined to succeed his ancestress in the duty to watch over them. If by some mischance they should leave the library, their stories would be forgotten forever, and they would disappear... and it is right when his parents decide to take a look at the books that the adventure begins! Nat, accidentally reduced to the same size of the small heroes, will strive to save his friends and their stories.
Presented for competition at the Rome Cinema Festival 2009 (section, Alice in the city), the result of the cooperation between the italian Lanterna Magica (producer of the The little seagull and the cat)and the frenchGaumont-Alphanim and La Fabrique, Eleanor’s Secret detaches itself from the usual panorama, dominated by Pixar and Dreamworks mega-productions. It is original: as original as the books in the library, ancient and rare editions: the film delights with some astounding sequences, able to give adults and children all the fascinating charm of the 2D background – a small jewel that enchants for its simplicity and vintage style, capturing the magic of the watercolour(photography by Rebecca Dautremer, graphic artist and illustrator for children's books). The Director, Dominique Monféry was nominated at the Academy Award 2004 for his animation short film Destino (“Destiny”), while settings are by Marco Martis, already known for Corto Maltese and The little seagull and the cat.

21.30PET PALS - MARCO POLO’S CODE
Directed by Sergio Manfio
Production: Gruppo Alcuni, Gruppo Edebè
Italy, 2010, 99'

Crow Witch hates Venice. Her repulsion for the town dates back to when she was a young sorceress and during a witchcraft spell she fell in the lagoon, causing to be mocked by every Magician present. She has now found in the Himalayas, the Palace containing all the witchcrafts invented by oriental Magicians in the past five thousand years, and intends to use the magic tricks of the Magic Palace for a singular aim: drain the Lagoon and turn the town in a city like all other towns, with streets instead of canals and motorbikes and cars instead of gondolas and boats. In other words, to destroy Venice. Luckily, the team of the Pet Pals strikes in order to stop her in the only possible way: find Marco Polo’s Code, that contains the instructions to discover the path and the access to the Magic Palace of Venice, lying under the Rialto Bridge, where all the magic tricks that could fight the evil witchcrafts of Crow Witch are held...
This amusing animation film produced in Italy is based on the popular television broadcasting animation show Pet Pals, produced in 2002 by the Gruppo Alcuni, in co-production with Rai Fiction, DQ Entertainment, Alphanim and Agogo Media.

Saturday, July 31st
21.00 – Prize-giving ceremonies of the Signor Rossi Award and Cartoon Junior Award.

21.30HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
Production: DreamWorks Animation
USA, 2010, 98'

Hiccup is a young Viking that, as he explains, lives in a village lost in nowhere in a cold, unfriendly land, with relatively few things to eat and most of all, haunted by dragons. The reason why the community does not move elsewhere is the very premise to the story and the highlights that stirs it: Vikings are stubborn and, instead of moving, prefer to fight – that's why they are all tall and beefy. Every Viking, that is, except Hiccup. Son of the leader of the village, Hiccup is skinny and unfit to fight, he is very keen on creating machineries (with which he tries to kill dragons) and has a consequent predisposition to create problems. This, until unexpectedly, he succeeds in capturing the most feared and unknown dragon just to find out that the Devil is not as evil as he is depicted.
